As 2018 comes to an end, threat actors continue to drive campaigns in hopes of catching shoppers, and the industry, off guard. With the increase in IoT devices for both personal and business use, we must ensure we remain protected while we ourselves, or our employees, are online. Below are a few tips to stay ahead of the adversary this holiday season.
3 Holiday safety tips:
- Stay Updated! As our home network footprint increases with IoT devices for sound, network, visual, and mobile, we must ensure the latest Firmware and patches are installed as well as change the default passwords of such devices, including wireless routers. This also holds true for corporate environments. Continuous patch management is always a top of mind strategy, but we must take a closer look and ensure we have the visibility to any new devices that are introduced to our network that could potentially cause harm.“Smart” technology can be great, but only if we take the steps to minimize risk.
- Continue to Train. User awareness training is important all year, but we can benefit from a touchpoint around the holiday season. With the promise of deals and quick shipping, the phishing and spam campaigns will be plentiful. Take this time to brush up on your security training and encourage your peers to do the same. Also, if you haven’t already, now is a great time to expose your family and friends to Cyber Security Awareness Training. The same threats that pose a risk in the workplace pose a risk to the consumer world.
- Stay Vigilant! Keep a vigilant eye this holiday season. If something seems too good to be true, it most likely is. If the link looks suspicious, don’t click it, report it. Be safe.
Have a safe and joyous Holiday Season!
